Old Town Today
Old Town today is not so very different from 100 years ago. As you walk through the town (a village really) you will see the same diversity in the shops and restaurants, and the many festivals that pass down the main street. Sometimes it seems that every month we have another new year celebration! Over the many years, these diverse communities have lived together in harmony, with many inter-cultural marriages and partnerships and it is this that makes Old Town ‘special’.
The town boasts a Hospital, Fire Department, Police Station, School, Bhuddist Wat, Chinese Temple, and a Mosque. There are also some government offices, children’s playgrounds, a long concrete pier, a weekly market, a post office, internet shops, a museum, and more.
While it may no longer be the main town on the Island, it is certainly the cultural center of the Island, and many tourist come for a stroll down the main street to enjoy the ambiance and the 100 year old stilted wooden shop-houses that line the street.
Many tours to the outlying islands dotted around the east coast of Lanta, or into the mangroves, leave from the pier with the occasional ferry stopping here too. Buses to the local town of Krabi, or the international airport, leave from the old town every hour, in both seasons (see Getting Here).
